About the Camp
Summer Scholars On Stage is a three-week residential theatre program at Mississippi State University where students create an original musical from the ground up. The camp blends performance, writing, and technical theatre, giving students a holistic view of the production process while experiencing life on a university campus.
Camp Overview
Summer Scholars On Stage is a three-week residential theatre program at Mississippi State University. Campers live in MSU residence halls, dine on campus, and rehearse in professional-quality theatre spaces, giving them a meaningful first experience of life on a university campus.
The camp begins with the Writing Track and Technical Theatre Track. During this first week, writers spend their days brainstorming, collaborating in small groups, and developing the script and songs for an original musical. While the writers are shaping the story and lyrics, Technical Theatre students are learning about the theatre, studying stagecraft, and assisting with designing and building the set and other production elements.
In the second week, the rest of the campers arrive and audition for roles in the production. Over the next two weeks, students participate in dance classes and music rehearsals to prepare for the show, and they also spend time in acting and theatre classes to expand their skills and understanding of the art form. Alongside rehearsals, campers enjoy a talent show, a dance, and other fun activities that build friendships and a strong sense of community.
The program culminates in a fully staged performance of the original musical, showcasing the work of every track—on stage, backstage, and behind the scenes.
Camp Tracks
The camp features three Program Tracks that work together to build the show: the Performance Track, the Writing Track (Scriptwriting & Music Composition), and the Technical Theatre Track. Each track focuses on a different part of the creative process while encouraging collaboration across the entire company.
